OPP Investigate Assaults on Asian Canadian Angler’s


Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have commenced an investigation into three reports of incidents involving Asian Canadian victims who have been fishing in communities in Central Region during the month of May.

On May 11, 2009 the OPP received a report that on May 8, 2009 in the late evening hours, an incident occurred on the causeway situated on Centennial Park Road in the City of Kawartha Lakes. A group of Asian Canadian anglers were standing on the causeway when a male party driving a red Volkswagen Golf vehicle with an unknown licence number, stopped and after a short altercation, the male left the scene.

On May 27, 2009 the OPP received a report of an incident that occurred on Cameron Lake in Fenelon Falls, near Delphi Point on the afternoon of the May 23, 2009. Two Asian Canadian anglers were fishing by boat when they were verbally threatened by an unknown male.

On May 27, 2009 the OPP received a report that on May 17, 2009, in the early evening hours, two Asian Canadian men were fishing on the Causeway between Bridgenorth and Ennismore Township in Peterborough County when an unknown person drove by in a pick-up truck and threw fireworks at the anglers. One male was struck but not injured.

All of the incidents are currently under investigation and further details will be released when they are available. The Central Regional Crime Unit and the OPP Hate Crimes/Extremism Unit are assisting in the investigation into these incidents.

The OPP has been an active participant with stakeholders including community groups to develop solutions to these type of incidents and is committed to finding those responsible and ensuring a safe and secure community.
